New OVMC website launched
May 1, 2009
A new OVMC website was launched today featuring a major cosmetic refresh, including a new OVMC logo. Although the content remains largely the same, some reorganization has occurred with the menu buttons in order to make the site easier to navigate.
The new website also takes also advantage of today's higher resolution monitors and occupies more screen real estate. The text has received a size increase to make the site easier to read, and photos in the gallery are larger. There is an archive of previous club events and news, and a Resources page for information such as details on organizing and participating in club drives.
Have a look around... we hope you enjoy the new website and visit often. |

OVMC accidentally hosts their first late night / early morning drive
July 19, 2009
It was a long evening for some members attending Pete's Peachland Post-Pool Patio Party and Potluck last Saturday night.
The expected turnout of 35 people was reduced dramatically as the forest fire in West Kelowna forced the closure of Highway 97, cutting off all access to Peachland from the north, just as the party was due to get underway. Eleven members coming from the north were early enough to miss the closure, and another five living south of the closure brought the total attendance 16. The rest of the members on their way to the party were turned back.
The fire also caused area power to be cut, and Pete's place, being downstream in terms of power distribution, was also thrown into the dark along with the rest of Peachland.
For the 11 members caught on the wrong side of the Highway, the shortest paved route to Kelowna was via Penticton, Osoyoos, Rock Creek, and Beaverdell. Hitting the road about 8:30 brought the group into Kelowna about 1:00 am, and Larry from Vernon still had another hour to go. The "Oh, what a bummer" award must go to Al and Bev who live in Westbank only 10 minutes north of the closure (they're not in the evacuation zone). Talk about taking the long way home! And for our new member Barb it was quite the adventurous introduction to the OVMC as this was her very first club event.
Gord and Patrice car-pooled to the party with Andy and Kim, who brought baby Gord, and therefore had the only non-Miata in the group. They decided on the shorter but much more adventurous route home; Penticton, Naramata, then up the Chute Lake forestry road, north down the Kettle Valley Railway bed, and down the Gillard Forest Service Road to Kelowna. It was a bit bumpy and rather dusty, but on the plus side the views were spectacular. The route was very busy in both directions that night but they still made it to Kelowna by 10:30.
Despite being small and brief we did manage to have nice gathering with some great food once again... thanks Pete! We will look into the possibility of scheduling another BBQ social event later in the summer or the fall, when hopefully we'll be able to get the whole club together. |
