Okanagan Valley Miata Club Newsletter
August 2004

Aug 15/04

Hello everyone,

We had  8 Miata arrive for last Sundays breakfast and drive.  After breakfast we headed up Westside road for a short rest stop at Fintry. Then onward to Vernon for Ice cream and a few kilometres of Vernon back roads. The weather cooperated to make it a great top down day!

This Saturday, July 17, we had planned to visit the Timberline property to see how our trees are doing and present the Pfob's with a gift certificate from Rick's Garden Supply. Unfortunately we have been unable to contact the property owners so we will have to cancel and hopefully re-book later in the season. More time to enjoy Kelowna's Regatta!

This month’s meeting will be next Wednesday, July 21 at 7:00 pm.  It will be at Penni Mitchell’s home.
447 Avery Road, off of Lakeshore Drive in the Mission.
Stay on Lakeshore past Barnaby. Avery is on the  left a short distance past this intersection.

Check this web address for information on this years Backroads to Bavaria hosted by Miata Club Northwest. This event, October 1 -3rd, is an easy drive for our club and has been a fun event in the past.

I understand that Doug Mitchell has a drivers side front fender for a M1 for sale. If you are interested contact Doug at: ---------------

Hope to see you at the meeting.

Jim

Can you let everybody know that I need email confirmation from everybody interested in the dyno by Monday evening at the latest. As of now, I've only received one confirmation and will need time to cancel or find more people if I don't get enough.
Thanks, Dutch.

Last Weekend's Vernon Run, Aug 8

Another successful run was organized by the Vernon Chapter of our club. 13 Miatas in all participated. The Kelowna group was a little late in arriving due to their leader (won't mention any names Ron) who took them on a side tour of the local hotels before breakfast.
It was a good run with some cool weather up on Silver Star Mountain but no snow!  Heading back down into the valley heat via a few twisty backroad and eventually stopping for a break and ice-cream in Lumby. A quick loop and back to Vernon by Mid afternoon.
If anyone who was on the tour is having overheating problems check you radiator!  Mine was completely covered in dead crispy grasshoppers!  I have included a few picture of the day.

Getting ready to leave, Vernon

Autocross News

A good turnout again last week. Miatas are the largest class competing against a field including Mustangs, TR6, MGBs, Datsun 410, Hondas, Toyotas etc etc. Dutch Lingenfelter running on race tires was the FTD.  (fastest time of the day) with a very impressive 4th run!  Congratulations Dutch! This coming Thursday is the last race of the season so come on out and support the Miata drivers.

Nakusp Hot Springs Runs  - Aug 19 Update

Since two dates were offered and about half the people responding opted for each date, there will be two runs.  The runs will leave on Saturday Sept 11 and Sept 25.  The days will start with breakfast at Mingles at 8:00 (for those not wanting breakfast please be there by 8:45).  If anyone from Vernon area wishes to come we would meet them at the OUC turnoff/shortcut to Hwy 6 (where we ended the Aug 08 run) at 9:30.  The next planned stop (bio break) is the BC Hydro rest area on the north side of the highway just before Cherryville.  There will be no restaurant lunch stop, to save time; so pack whatever lunch will keep you happy until suppertime.  We will take a short lunch break at the rest area at either end of the Needles ferry; on the west side if we have to wait (ferry is on a 30 minute cycle) or on the east side if we don't.  Then we'll head straight up (through Nakusp) to the hot springs for a soak (bring a towel, and a small padlock for the locker or a bag in which to bring your clothes out to the pool).  My guess it that we will arrive at the pool around 13:00; a great time to catch some rays for the last of your summer tan!
After that there are several options for each Miata:
- go home
- stay at the hot springs (www.nakusphotsprings.com/hotsprings.htm - click on "Cedar Chalets" and bring food or drive down to Nakusp to eat) or stay in Nakusp (three motels + B&B's)
- continue on a Kootenay tour

The Sept 11 group currently consists of:
 Bev/Renald
 Ron
 Patrice/Gord
 Matt
 Pete

The Sept 25 group currently consists of:
 Nicole/Dutch
 Ron
 Marnie
 Penny
 Kate/Kurt
 Brenda/Pete

Most of this group is planning to continue on a Kootenay tour with an overnight in Nelson.  Kurt will check out getting a group block of rooms at the Prestige Inn.
Terri/John who live in Nakusp expect to join us for the run up to the hot springs on one (or both?) of these dates.  I will arrange when/where to meet.
If you are not going on the Sept 25 Kootenay tour and wish to stay overnight, please make you own reservations.
Anybody who is not mentioned above and would like to come along please e-mail me at ----------------  We would love to have you.
Cheers!
Pete

Nakusp Run #2

At our last meeting, those in attendance discussed extending the drive of the September 25, Nakusp Run and staying over night at Nelson. I believe we have at least six cars interested in doing this. My nephew manages the Prestige Inn (right on the lake) in Nelson and has offered us a preferred rate of $99.50 a night. It’s still prime time for them and their regular rate is $179.00.  I’ve booked a room for myself and will book rooms for anyone else interested in staying there. Please let my know ASAP if you are interested. You can email me at kwneumann@shaw.ca , call me at ------- during the day or at ------- in the evening.
Thanks,
Kurt Neumann
PS. Yes, this deal does also apply to non-red Miatas.
