July 2005
Happy Canada Day weekend. I hope everyone is out enjoying this long weekend. Great weather so far for top down driving.
Upcoming Miata Club Outings:
1. The Sea to Sky club is having their "Triangle Tour" on Saturday, July 9th (next weekend). They will be travelling from Abbotsford and arriving in Princeton for lunch at around 12 to 12:30 depending on stops etc. From there they are driving some great Miata roads into the old mining town of Tulameen and back and then north to Aspengrove before heading home down the Coquihalla to Vancouver. I think it would be fun for our club to join them in Princeton for lunch and then tour the backroads of Tulameen and highway 5A north to Aspen Grove . We would then part company with Sea to Sky members and head back to Kelowna Via the connector (97C).
Kelowna Meeting place will be at the Tim Hortons on the highway (Harvey) between Water and Abbott Streets. Please arrive early - we will be leaving there no later than 9am. Penticton members can meet us at the Kettle Valley Station Pub at the Northwest entrance to Penticton (Just before the Ramada Hotel as you cross the bridge into Penticton.) This will be a brief stop so please be ready. We should arrive there at approx 9:45 to 10am. If time permits we will travel the Green Mountain road on our way to Princeton. Penticton to Princeton is 112 kilometres so we should arrive just before lunch. Total round trip is approx. 350 km.
Those members that are racing in Merritt on Sunday could plan a weekend and stay the night in Merritt.
If you are interested in coming with us, please email Jim. I will need to let Chris from Sea to Sky know if we are joining them and approx numbers. The weather is going to be fantastic.
2. Nakusp Hot Springs Run - September 10 to ? Back by popular demand, it will be the same format as last year. Meet at Mingle's for breakfast, up to OUC Vernon and then out Highway 6 through the Monashee's, a bring your own lunch at the Fauquier Ferry rest stop, then on to Nakusp and up the Kuskanax Creek valley to the Hot Springs. Warm weather has been ordered, but in any case the springs are always a warm treat. The Monashee section of the highway and the recently paved road up to the Hot Springs are very Miata friendly.
After our soak, sun, whatever those that wish to go on to Kaslo, Nelson (more Miata friendly roads) or wherever can do so, and those who wish to go home will now know the way. The arrangements for those that wish to stay out in the Kootenay's longer will be determined based on what the participants want.
Please e--mail me at wphahn@shaw.ca if you are interested in coming and let me know whether you would like to do the one day or two day (or more) run.

Tour Suggestions
So far there has been no interest shown by members for the following events. Miata's are made for driving - let's get out there as a club and have some fun!
"South across the border" - Cross at Nighthawk and drive east through Washington state to cross again at Midway. Possibly an overnight (Camping?) at Christina Lake. Return to Kelowna on Highway 3 the following day.
"Cariboo or Bust" - A two or three day Cariboo trip. Travel up the north Thompson to Little Fort and over the plateau to 100 Mile House and area. Return via Lilloett, Lyton and Ashcroft. Maybe even as far north as Barkerville?
"Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival" - August 13 or 14th. Check out the website: http://www.rootsandblues.ca/
This run is a one day morning event. If you don't wish to attend the festival you can go on from there to enjoy some of the many other attractions/drives of the Shuswap area. Those attending the Festival will probably not be heading home till late in the evening. Take a look at the website to see the excellent talent that will be performing. It is truly a fantastic music festival.
If you would like to help with any of there events or have your own great ideas, please let me know.
Thanks,
Jim Dennison
How not to park a Miata!
Party Time - Summer Is Here!!
OVMC Meeting/Pool Party/BBQ - July 16 at Pete Hahn's, 6249 Thompson Drive, Peachland (767 2576)
All OVMC members are encouraged to come! Please e-mail me before Thursday if you are coming.
Meeting: 4:00 sharp
Party: 5:00 (you don't have to be sharp, but don't be flat; be cool) You don't have to come to the meeting to attend the party.
Directions: At the only traffic signal on Hwy 97 if coming from the north turn right , if coming from the south as in Penticton turn Left (up the hill). As you are so doing, deftly zero your trip meter and go 3.5 Km up Princeton Ave. Turn right on Forest Hill and go 100 feet (30 metres) and turn right again onto Thompson. Look for the balloons attached to the Courier box, but check to see that you are at 6249, or you could end up at another party. If you find yourself driving on a gravel trail you have gone too far. Park in the driveway or on the street; anything goes in Peachland. Go through the carport and down to the pool area. Now print off these directions!
Rules: There is only one. PLEASE, NO GLASS CONTAINERS AROUND THE POOL! Plastic glasses will be provided. Glass, concrete, vinyl liners and bare feet don't mix.
Getting Wet (Outside): Bring your bathing suit (local ordinance allows skinny dipping only after dark) and a towel.
BBQ/Pot Luck: Hamburgers, Veggie Burgers, Turkey Wieners (they are good) and buns/condiments will be provided. Please bring a salad or dessert.
Getting Wet (Inside): Soft drinks and leftover (unopened) wine from the Sun Run will be provided. Bring any other libations that you may wish to consume (BYOB). Coffee will be provided around dessert time if the host remembers to turn on the machine.
Triangle Tour Hosted By The Sea To Sky Miata Club
Last Saturdays Triangle tour Run was a great success! 8 Miatas from our club left Kelowna at 9am and after picking up a few more on the way, we enjoyed a great drive on the Green Mountain road and the old Hedley road into Princeton. We arrived at noon and settled ourselves down at the Pub to wait for the Vancouver group, who arrived a half hour later. Although the service was extra slow, (maybe 22 surprise guests was part of the reason), we had an enjoyable 3 hour lunch sitting outside in the sunshine! After gassing up in Princeton we all headed up 36 kilometres of curves to Coalmont and Tulemeen, two old mining towns with a stop at the provincial park on Otter lake for a break. From there we retraced our route to Princeton and headed north up Highway 5A to Aspengrove. For anyone who hasn't driven these routes, they are made for the Miata! At Aspengrove we said goodbye to the Sea to Sky members and drove the connector home.
Warm weather and sunshine the whole trip. Thank you to Chris from the Sea to Sky club for letting us join in. As he said - the more the merrier.

"Cariboo Or Bust" Trip
Our member in the Cariboo, Rod Knopp has offered to help organize this event. Below is his email to me.
If there are members who would like to take part please contact me asap so that we can get it organized. Let me know how many will attend and your preferred dates. This is a great opportunity to have a local member guide us through the best backroads of the area!
Re: "Cariboo or bust" idea. I would be happy to help organize this. I live in 150 Mile House, and I could host a BBQ one afternoon or evening at my house. I have a house on 2 acres, so plenty of parking.
The 1-hour drive to Likely/Horsefly is a windy, paved road, and the Big Lake pub is a great lunch stop.
Lots of cheap motels in Williams Lake (10 minutes from 150 Mile), so even a one-night stop would be fun and inexpensive. I can supply a list of choices & prices.
If there are only 3 or 4 couples, I have a 7-bedroom house and they can all stay here for the night.
Kelowna to 150 Mile House is about a 5 hours' drive.
Let me know if there is interest...........
I should add that the best dates for me are the weekends of July 16, 23, 30, Aug. 6 and Aug 27th
