Meeting and Social - Wednesday, September 24

Our regular monthly meeting and social will be held at Steve and Chris’ place, 2180 Tomat Avenue on the Westside starting at 7:00 p.m. Click here for a map. We’ll need to plan the last of the fall drives, and kick around some ideas for next season. There will also be a few items to discuss regarding the upcoming Backroads to Bavaria event.

The "Finally, a Westside Road run" Run - Sunday, September 21

Due to a misalignment of the planets and moons, we have somehow managed to inadvertently avoid Westside Road for the entire season. Well, no more! It's time to rectify this gross oversight and head for that classic Miata road we all know and love.

The plan this time is to do a relatively short run and picnic and be back in Kelowna by early afternoon. We’ll be leaving from the Capri Mall parking lot (around the back along Capri Street) at 10:30 a.m. sharp so please meet there a few minutes early. After Westside Road we'll make our way around the end of Okanagan Lake, throwing in some twisty and scenic roads for good measure. Pack yourself a picnic lunch as we’ll be making a stop at Kin Beach in Vernon about 12:00 - 12:30. After lunch we’ll hit the road and should be back in Kelowna by 2:00 p.m.

Nakusp Drive & Dip Weekend - September 6 & 7

Pete Hahn is once again organizing this drive over some great Miata roads in the beautiful West Kootenays to Nakusp for a dip in one of BC's best hot springs. You then have the option of returning home the same day or spending the night in Nakusp and taking part in the Sunday activities; a visit to the Hills Garlic Festival in New Denver and a side trip to the ghost (mining) town of Sandon. If you are coming please e-mail Pete at ------------------ so that we know how many to expect for Saturday breakfast and who we should be looking to meet for the run.

Saturday, September 6:
8:30 - Breakfast at The Jammery. For those who are not interested in breakfast, please be there by 9:30 for the start of the run up to Vernon.
9:30 - Start of run.
10:00 - Meet Vernon area people at the OUC Vernon roadside (north) parking area.
We'll make a stop at the BC Hydro rest area just before Cherryville.
The next stop will be at the Needles ferry. There is usually a short wait for the ferry, so this is a good opportunity for a bite to eat if you bring your own lunch. There is a picnic area and washroom at either end of the ferry.
Continue zooming through Nakusp and up to the Nakusp Hot Springs for a dip.
Option 1 - Return home Saturday.
Option 2 - Stay in Nakusp overnight (see accommodation info below).

Sunday September 7:
10:00 - Leave Nakusp and drive to New Denver and take in the Hills Garlic Festival on the shore of Slocan Lake. It's all about all kinds of garlic, garlic in foods (even ice cream), plus craft stalls and some musical entertainment. After that there is an optional run up to Sandon for any history buffs. Around the turn of the century Sandon was a thriving mining town of about 5000, but due to fires, flood and neglect there is little remaining today. There are a few original buildings however, the original (and still working!) water turbine powerhouse, and a museum. Sandon's website is a great source of history and information.
Option 3 - Return home via Castlegar and Rock Creek.
Option 4 - Take the New Denver, Kaslo, Nelson loop home.
Option 5 - Stay out in the West Kootenays another day.

Accommodations in Nakusp:
Here are a few options for places to stay in Nakusp. For other area accommodations please see the free British Columbia Approved Accommodation Guide.
Nakusp Hot Springs Cedar Chalets - Next door to the hot springs, but on weekends they require a minimum two night stay and there is no restaurant there.
Kuskanax Lodge - Hotel with restaurant in downtown Nakusp.
Selkirk Inn - Hotel in downtown Nakusp, no restaurant.
Canyon Court Motel - A "budget" motel a few minutes north of downtown Nakusp.
Bear Ridge Cabins - Part way up the Hot Springs Road, 5 minute drive to downtown.
Hotsprings Guesthouse - 1 bedroom cabin and 2 bedroom suite on the lake, just a few minutes north of downtown Nakusp.
Murphy's Landing - Cabins on the lake, a few minutes north of downtown Nakusp.

Thanks to Lori and Kelly Barnes who did some research and came up with the following:
"We just called the hotels in Nakusp and gathered a little info that we thought you might want to share with the others who are considering this trip. The Selkirk Inn has rooms with one King Size bed and air conditioning for $75. The Kuskanax Lodge has similar rooms for $99, and some with queen beds and without air conditioning for $79. The Kuskanax Lodge does have a restaurant, but the rate does NOT include breakfast. We have stayed at the Selkirk Inn and it is decent enough. From the pictures posted on their websites, the two places seem quite comparable. Our recommendation is the Selkirk. A little cheaper for comparable rooms, and the town is small enough that it is a very short walk to any of the restaurants in town anyways."

More thoughts from Pete:
"I do not want to legislate where people will stay. There are no planned events between the pool swim and the Sunday activities so let your personal preference be your guide. Betty and I are staying at the hot springs because we like it up there. If there several people who expect to stay at one place it might make sense to reserve the rooms as a block."

The Miata gets a facelift

August 29, 2008

Mazda will display a redesigned MX-5 Miata at the 2008 Paris International Motor Show, October 2 through 19, 2008.

The facelift is limited to the front of the car but the overall appearance is significantly changed. The traditional oval grill has been completely reshaped, the air intake / fog light openings are much larger, and the headlights appear sleeker.

Also on display at the show will be a Mazda6 with an new 2.2 litre turbo diesel, a Mazda2 powered by a 1.6-liter diesel and the new Mazda Kiyora concept car.

Triangle Tour - Sunday, August 24

The Sea to Sky club is holding their annual "Triangle Tour" on August 24 and the OVMC has once again been invited to join the fun.

The Sea to Sky members will leave Hope at 10:30 am and expect to arrive in Princeton between 12:30 and 1:00 pm.

OVMC members will meet at the Wendy's in Westbank at 9:30 am and will depart for Princeton shortly thereafter. Anyone from the Penticton area can meet the group in the Kettle Valley Station Pun parking lot (click here for a map) at 10:30 am. The suggested route would be Kelowna to Penticton to Keremeos (via Green Mountain Road) to Hedley and on to Princeton.

Triangle Tour 2006
The 2 clubs will meet for lunch at the Copper Mountain Bar and Grill (click here for a map) between 12:30 and 1:00 pm.

After lunch we'll follow their group down some great back roads through the old mining towns of Coalmont and Tulameen, then head north up Highway 5A until we hit the Okanagan Connector (97C) at Aspen Grove. We’ll then wave goodbye as the Sea to Sky folks head toward Merritt and the OVMC heads for home via the Connector. The total round trip is about 400 km from Kelowna.

Meeting, Social and BBQ - Wednesday, August 20 (RSVP required for the BBQ)

We’ll be hitting the road for our regular meeting & social and heading south to Penticton this month. Jim and Mary Stone will be hosting the event and have kindly offered to put on a BBQ for us as well, so plan on having dinner at the Stone’s.
The meeting will be held August 20 (yes, it’s 1 week ahead of usual) at 6:30 pm (a bit earlier than usual too to accommodate the BBQ). If you can’t make it until later that’s fine too.
The Stone’s will supply burgers and dogs if we all bring a little something to go with it, like a salad or dessert and BYOB. Please bring any folding lawn chairs you may have as well (or non-folding chairs if you don’t mind strapping them to the fender).

Please RSVP to ------------------------------ by Monday August 18 so they can arrange for the appropriate amount of food.

The address is -------------------------. Click here for a map. Directions from Kelowna:
- When you get to Penticton, follow Highway 97 by turning right at the lights at Railway Street (Channel Parkway) just past the golf course.
- Turn left at the lights at Fairview Road (opposite our usual Green Mountain Road turnoff).
- Turn right onto ------------------- and look for --------, kitty corner behind NAPA.

Anyone wanting to travel to Penticton as a group should meet outside the Wendy’s in Westbank at 5:30.

As most of you know there are highway closures in Summerland for construction. The southern members deal with it regularly so it’s the northerner’s turn for a change! There will be no evening closures prior to 7:00 pm, so we’ll be fine going down, but on the way home we will have to be aware of the closure times, which are as follows (as of this this writing): 1 hour closures from 7:00 to 8:00, 8:30 to 9:30 and 10:00 to 11:00. The good news is that all traffic arriving at the site prior to the closure will be allowed through. For example, for the 10:00 closure, if you arrive at 9:59 and there is a 15 minute line-up of cars ahead of you, they will not close the road until all cars are through, even though they will go past 10:00 to do it. The latest closure info can be found here:

Vernon drive & "Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo-Jump" BBQ - Sunday, August 10  (RSVP required for BBQ)

Join Deanie & Les as they celebrate the annual "Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo-Jump" BBQ.
You'll have to come to learn the history of the BBQ's name...

Let's meet in the Safeway parking lot (downtown Kelowna), corner of Bernard Ave and Richter Street at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 10th. We plan to depart the parking lot by 9:15 a.m. We'll wind our way through the back roads of East Kelowna, North Glenmore, Oyama and onward to Vernon. Drivers wanting to join the group in Vernon should meet in the Starbucks parking lot (across from Polson Park, Vernon) by 10:30 a.m. We plan to enjoy a few more backroads and return to Oyama by 1:00 p.m. for an informal social BBQ.

If you can't make the drive, Deanie & Les would love you to join them for the BBQ at 1:00 p.m. Meet them at Site 5 - Klub Kal, Kalamalka Lake, 17451 Crystal Waters Road, Oyama. They'll be grilling steaks, serving veggies and homemade dessert! BYOB. Everyone is welcome to bring their swim gear and towel... we share a small, sandy beach.

Please RSVP to ------------------------ by Friday, August 8th so we'll know how much food to prepare.

Okanagan Valley Miata Club donates to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada

August 1, 2008

The Okanagan Valley Miata Club has donated $2,300.00 to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada from money raised during the 2008 Topless Sun Run. The funds were raised through Sun Run clothing sales, the 50/50 draw and general revenue.
The Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada was chosen as the recipient of the 2008 proceeds after an OVMC member lost a son to a brain tumour earlier in the year.
The OVMC would like to thank all the Sun Run participants for their generosity and for helping us contribute to this worthy cause.
