Backroads To Bavaria X
Club Miata Northwest event
Thursday, October 2 to Sunday, October 5, 2008
Tour Leader: Gord
The 2008 Backroads to Bavaria marked the 10th anniversary of this annual weekend event hosted by our friends from Club Miata Northwest. The Miata gathering takes place in the Bavarian village of Leavenworth, Washington, and was expanded to four days this year to mark the 10AE celebrations. The head count was also expanded to 250 people and about 140 cars. The event featured special guest Tom Matano, Mazda's chief designer responsible for the NA and NB Miatas. Eleven Miatas from the OVMC made the pilgrimage, taking in some great backroads and staying off the main highway much of the way.
The weather forecast was not promising for the weekend, but somehow the rain held off for virtually all our time behind the wheel and for other major outdoor events like the Miata Games and the Show & Shine. The event also included some great tours through the beautiful Cascade area, a fantastic Miata memorabilia exhibit, a Meguiars seminar, garage sale, banquet, Tom Matano's presentation and much more. With all those events we still managed to spend some time exploring Leavenworth during Octoberfest. Dr. Mario's Show 'n Shine resulted in awards to OVMC members Bev and Renald (Best License Plate), Steve and Chris (People's Choice), and Gord and Patrice (Garage Queen). Gord and Patrice also won the Tom Matano Award, chosen by Mr. Matano as his favourite car of the show.
Our members headed for home Sunday morning, making a side-trip to the old-west town of Winthrop for lunch.
