Wild West Winthrop Washimgton Weekend

A total of 22 cars and 42 people from the OVMC took part in this weekend adventure in Washington. Friday morning the group made their way to the U.S.A. via Green Mountain Road, Keremeos and the Nighthawk border crossing. We continued to avoid the main highway by taking the beautiful Loomis-Oroville Road past Palmer, Spectacle and Whitestone Lakes before linking up with the seldom-travelled Highway 7. We finally ran out of back roads and were forced onto Highway 97 about 20 minutes north of our lunch break destination of Omak. After lunch we completed the final leg of the journey over Highway 20 west to Winthrop. The majority of the group stayed at the River's Edge Resort, a series of beautiful cabins located right on the Chewuch River in downtown Winthrop. Others stayed at the Hotel Rio Vista and other locations around town. Friday night was a pizza night and open house one of the big cabins at the River's Edge.
Saturday morning we made our way down the North Cascade Highway over some of the best curves and past some of the most incredible scenery there is. We stopped to take in the breathtaking views at the Diablo Lake lookout, then continued on to our picnic stop in Newhalem, a historic hydro-electric town operated by Seattle City Light. There we met up with members from Club Miata Northwest, 13 cars strong. After our picnic lunch in the park, we took the trail past the old powerhouse and the Skagit River to Ladder Creek Falls. We then retraced our steps over the North Cascade Highway with the CMNW members back to Winthrop. Saturday night we had another open house at the River's Edge cabins.
Sunday morning both clubs met for a group photo before saying our goodbyes and heading for home. We saved a few back roads for the return journey of course; the back road from Winthrop to Twisp, from Omak to Riverside, and from Oroville to the Nighthawk border crossing. As always it was great to see some old friends from Club Miata Northwest and meet some new folks. It was also nice to get to know some new OVMC members on this trip as well. Add to that the incredibly twisty roads and breathtaking scenery and it was a truly memorable weekend.
