25 Years Of Miata
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca event
Friday, September 5 to Sunday, September 7, 2014
Two cars representing the OVMC (Harold and Arleen, Rolly and Sharon) attended the 25 Years Of Miata celebrations at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. We left on August 30 heading for Seaside, California. We took an inland route down Highway 97 to Yakima, Washington where we spent the first night. The next day we headed for Lincoln City, Oregon via Highway 12. The third day had us driving the Oregon Coast to our overnight stop in Gold Beach, Oregon. On the fourth day we continued along the coast to Garberville, California. The fifth day took us along Highway 1 in California, which hugs the coast and is very scenic and winding in spots. Our overnight stay was in San Rafael, California, just north of San Francisco. Our last day of driving took us through San Francisco to our final destination of Seaside, California . Over the six days we enjoyed many nice scenic and twisty roads through landscapes including deserts, beaches, oceans and forests (including the Redwoods).
We really enjoyed the three day Mazda event at the track and it was great to get together with so many Miata enthusiasts from Canada (about 37 cars) the US and other countries. Some of those enthusiasts were given the coveted OVMC pin! The main activities we participated in were: The World Record for the most Miatas gathered in one place (1,934 cars registered!); the Miata "family" portrait of over 1,200 cars spelling out "MX-5 25th" when seen from the air; the public reveal of the new generation 2016 MX-5; the Mazda insider presentations; parade laps of the track (click here to see Harold's video); watching a Spec Miata, Super Miata and Teen Mazda challenge sprint race; vendor displays; BBQs and movie under the stars. The organizers did an outstanding job putting on this event, and left everyone with good memories. On the last of the five days in Seaside, we toured the Wharf area of Monterey, drove on the famous 17 Mile Road through Pebble Beach and visited Carmel by-the-Sea.
Our return trip to the Okanagan saw us staying three nights back in San Rafael. We visited San Francisco where we toured the Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown and Pier 39. We also rode the ferry, the trolley and cable cars. Our last three days of driving took us mostly on Highways 5 and 97 through California, Oregon and Washington, where we saw rice fields, walnut groves and olive groves. After 16 days of sunshine and 4,400 kms, we arrived back in the Okanagan on Sunday, September 14.
