Tour Leaders: Bill, Jadine
Twenty five Miatas came together to participate in the Okanagan Valley Miata Club's 25th Anniversary Road Rally. It was a beautiful sunny day and many people appreciated getting a 25th anniversary hat. During the meeting more than a few puzzled looks were shared when Bill and Jadine explained the tasks and read the first chapter of "The Little Car That Could". Each couple was provided with instructions to their separate starting location and a traffic cone to be placed at each spot before being sent on their way for a shotgun start at 1 pm.
While the weather forecast predicted rain, it turned out very hot, in more ways than one! One nameless couple barely got into their Miata before starting to argue about the route, and more heated discussions resulted from missed turns and hard to find cones. Many couples were just excited to cross their name off the envelope in triumph as they navigated their way through the rally. We are happy to announce that while some people came close to divorce, the excellent food, fun and prizes at the Harvest Golf Club made up for all the frustrations. One happy traveller reported that the route was imaginative, with grand vistas, and twisty roads that put most of the participants on roads they had never travelled on before.
Not everyone made it to every checkpoint. Some admired the views, some took pictures, while two thirsty participants went wine-tasting and recorded their final Pit Stop with a photo. Bruce and Donna made it to every checkpoint in record time and managed to fit in a swim at home before rejoining the rest of the lost, hot and road-weary stragglers.
For those who guessed there would be a test afterwards, you obviously know Jadine well! Several people thought ahead and used their camera to record the story at each of the checkpoints, while others looked up the answers on their smartphones during the test. Everyone managed to arrange the letters provided to complete the sentence: "Drive your Miata and admire the views." Four groups managed to get 22 out of 25 questions correct, forcing a draw. The winning team of Chris and Steve, Karen and Mike, and Kate and Kurt were drawn, with each couple winning a $50.00 gas card. Additional door prizes were then raffled off, with each couple winning at least one prize.
Each participating couple also received a box of Topless Red and White Wines, two 25th Anniversary wine glasses, and a wooden model of a Miata and flag. Thanks to Bruce Stevenson for providing his skills and equipment in crafting the wine, while Dot and Pete Schoneberg deserve credit for building and hand painting each model.
Brian and Matt August of Kelowna Motors were pleased to participate in the Road Rally in a 2014 25th Anniversary Special Edition MX-5. We appreciate their participation and donation of prizes. They provided the large print of the 25th Anniversary Special Edition MX-5 which was won by Jenny and Roy. They also provided some free oil changes and the teddy bears that decorated each table. Extra Special Thanks to Mazda Canada is in order. The original plan was for a much simpler event, but after receiving Mazda Canada's generous donation of $5000, Jadine and Bill scrambled to put together a very different 25th Anniversary. Mazda Canada's support provided the hats, banquet dinner, wine for each table, the 25th Anniversary glasses in the Topless Wine boxes, as well as many of the door prizes. Our thanks to the staff of Harvest Golf Club, who went out of their way to provide a warm welcome. They also donated a round of golf for two with power cart at their award winning course as a door prize. Thanks to the following businesses who provided door prizes: A New Start Rejuvenation, Autoshine Plus, Italian Kitchen Company, Jennuine Esthetics, Olivia's Oils and Vinegars, and Tita's Italian Restaurant.
We think Steve Berry summed it up the best: "The banquet was the piece de resistance. Your decorations, toy cars, lanterns, bears, and take home booty were well themed, fun and even practical (well maybe not so much the bears, they were just damned cute). Yes, Bruce deserves kudos for the wine. The food was excellent, service absolutely exceptional and yes a good time was had by all. Thanks folks, very much."
