Tinhorn Creek Winery Lunch Run

Tour Leader: Bill
Our second mid-week lunch run had us heading south under the promise of clear blue skies and the warmest day so far this year. Nine cars began the journey from the Tim Horton's in Westbank on the way to Summerland, where we picked up an additional car before taking the scenic route down Canyon View Road to Thornhaven Estates Winery. The winery is in a beautiful spot nestled on the slopes of Giant's Head Mountain and overlooking the vineyards and orchards above Trout Creek. There we met the club's newest members RJ and Stuart, the first to be hooked by the club's new "come join us" cards. After a delightful tasting of Thornhaven's finest, our trunks filled with wine and our ranks now swollen to eleven cars, we were off to Penticton via the "hammerhead" of Bottleneck Drive, Summerland's wine route.
In Penticton we met up with one more Miata and with an even dozen cars in attendance we headed south to Okanagan Falls and up the switchbacks of Green Lake Road. A delightful drive through the ranch country of Willowbrook Road brought us to Oliver and Tinhorn Creek Winery, where we were greeted by a sign welcoming us to their tasting room. Half of the group chose to dine in the shade of Miradoro's patio overlooking the stunning view towards Osoyoos Lake, while the rest enjoyed a picnic in the winery's lovely vineyard garden. More wine went into the trunks!
Life time Oliver resident and close neighbour of Tinhorn Creek Winery, Larry Shannon, met us in his Miata and thirteen cars drove up to the old Fairview townsite. Fairview is one of BC's many ghost towns along the Gold Trail and Larry gave us an excellent history lesson on the region. After that, the group broke up, each finding their own way home. Five cars made one more stop at Medici's Gelateria & Coffee House in Oliver before heading home. We were delighted by their delicious and refreshing gelatos and sorbettos in the coolness of a converted Catholic church.
