On a beautiful sunny day, July 14, 2015, a cluster of 6 Miatas and their respective owners headed south through the Osoyoos/Oroville border crossing to begin a journey to Explore Oregon 2015. After a stop in Omak to pick up some picnic lunch fixin's and fuel, we continued on to Chelan, Washington where we enjoyed our lunches in the park beside Lake Chelan. We followed the secondary roads to Wenatchee where we picked up US 2 for a bit and then up over the hump on 97 to Ellensburg where we had our first ice cream break at the local Dairy Queen. We finished that day at the Oxford Suites in Yakima.
The next morning we headed west along US 12 until we hit highway 410, recommended to us by a local. We detoured via this route up past the Crystal Mountain Ski Area and around the south side of Mount Ranier before linking back up to US 12. A short jaunt down I-5 before turning off on SR 411 to Longview, Washington. We hopped the bridge across the Columbia River into Oregon and took a few side roads out to US 101, the Coast Highway. Our stop that night was at Lincoln City.
The next day saw us continue on down 101 until we hit Reedsport where we diverted over to I-5 via Highways 38 and 138. A quick hop down the freeway to Grants Pass completed our run for the day. We met up with two other couples from our club who had travelled there on different routes. Explore Oregon 2015 offered a number of drives on Friday. One run took participants to Crater Lake, another to Gold Beach, and the third to the Oregon Caves.
On Saturday, we had choices of wine tastings, over there river and through the woods, The vortex Mystery Tour. The day concluded with a very enjoyable, but very wet, jet boat ride down the Rogue River to our dinner destination just under 18 miles downstream at the OK Corral.
Sunday saw us splitting up into separate groups for the return home. A group of us met in Newport, Oregon for the night and then another gathering back at Yakima the next night.
