Members of the Okanagan Valley Miata Club attended the Caravan Farm Theatre's production of “Our Town”, by Thornton Wilder. Our journey began from the parking lot of Okanagan Lake Shopping Centre on the Westside. We had 11 cars and 21 people. At the theatre we met 4 more, so 25 people in total. Headed down Westside Road under great sunny skies to Fintry Provincial park for our picnic. We dined by the water and enjoyed the company of the wonderful members of “Our Club!”
After a delicious picnic, we continued along Westside Road to the farm. We were followed all the way by some dark clouds that were determined to dampen our spirits! Just as we got settled in our seats, the rain began and continued in earnest for about 20 minutes. Thanks to the quick thinking staff, we were transformed into bag people, as we quickly sought cover under the trees while trying to stick our hands and head out of our garbage bags so we could breathe in the fresh rain air. When the rain subsided, we all headed back to our wet seats. A little wet, but spirits not dampened!
We were transformed to 1901 in Grover's Corner in New Hampshire. The actors brought to life the characters of this town and we quickly got caught up in their lives! Was life simpler in those days as compared to today...??? Perhaps not, but the humour was entertaining and the young love story and town drunk captured our interest! The final act with the “Sitting Dead” in the cemetery was extremely emotional as we realized that we had got attached to some of these people's lives and were sad to see them leave their homes and end up in the cemetery. The final scene when one of the young lovers died in child birth, brought tears to many eyes. We quickly pulled ourselves together and drove home watching the lightning flashing in the sky overhead. A good time was had by all.
