After hosting 5 “Miatas In Moab” events, the Utah Miata Club held their first major event in Northern Utah. We left Penticton on Sunday, June 19 under grey and overcast skies with the definite threat of rain. However, when we arrived at the Oroville border crossing south of Osoyoos, there was a definite line along the 49th. On the north side were the clouds and on the south side was blue sky and sunshine. Those conditions lasted the entire time we were on the road.
After a few overnights on the way to the event, we arrived mid afternoon on Wednesday at the Chateau Deer Valley, one of the Stein Eriksen lodges in Park City. After checking in, we took the complimentary shuttle to a concert in the park down in the valley. The next day we were able to do a self guided tour around the area. We chose a route that took us via major routes to Alpine, UT before returning via Midway, UT and Empire Pass to the hotel. The route over the Pass was paved but was very narrow and windy - a perfect Miata road.
Friday was the day for the guided tours. While Rolly took the Wolf Creek Pass choice, Sharon took the shuttle to Main Street to do some window shopping and taking in the sights of the once mining, now ski resort town of Park City. Saturday was the day for the show and shine and photo op at the top of Empire Pass. While there, Tom Matano arrived in his rental car after flying in from San Francisco. He managed to sign a number of trunk lids before he needed to get down to the hotel to check in and get a bit of rest. He did sign more trunks before the evening banquet. We were fortunate enough to have ours signed.
The evening's entertainment included a PowerPoint presentation by Tom on his history as an auto designer with Mazda and other manufacturers, highlighting his success with the first Miata. A local comedian, Johnny Biscuit, a former Miata owner, kept the crowd in stitches with his anecdotes and jokes.
Too soon, it came time to bid adieu to our old friends and new ones as well. Sunday morning saw the 110 registered Miatas leaving for various destinations.
