Seven MX5 Miatas started off on June 20th for the major run of the season for OVMC. We drove to Merritt then took scenic Hwy. 8 to Spences Bridge. A quick drive up Hwy. 1 to Lytton then up to Lillooet along the banks of the Fraser far below. After some great twist and turns we stopped for lunch. Next we took Hwy. 99 to Whistler. This road has many curves and some of the most spectacular scenery in the province. Lakes in the valley and glaciers on the peaks make up for Albertans futzing along scared silly.
After a night in expensive and busy Whistler we made a mad dash to catch the ferry to Gibsons, only to be informed when we got there that they switched to the summer schedule a week early and we will have to wait an extra 1.5 hours. After a scenic ferry ride we took the twisty coastal road into Gibsons for a great lunch at the historic Molly’s Reach. We then drove up Hwy. 101 to Madeira Park and checked in. The motel rooms faced a large open grass area with a fire pit, so much socializing took place. We headed off to the Italian restaurant at Ruby Lake Resort for a fine meal on a deck overlooking the lake with wildlife all around. Later we had a campfire, singalong and enjoyed a few beverages. Some stayed well into the night.
For breakfast, we made our way down a twisty road to a wonderful spot at a marina and had the most amazing breakfast at the John Henry. We took the ferry over to Powell River, where it was raining, so decided to proceed on the Lund. This village is very ole, at the entrance to Desolation Sound and the very end of Hwy. 101. The hotel dates back to 1889. We enjoyed poking about and then drove through old growth forests back to Powell River where most toured the brewery. That evening we headed back towards Lund for a seafood buffet at the renowned Laughing Oyster. Again we were all seated on the deck overlooking the ocean. The feeling of contentment was palpable.
The next day most headed over to Vancouver Island to visit with friends or family, ending our three day Miata odyssey.
