We started the 2016 Miata season with a fabulous drive to Tickleberry’s Ice Cream in Okanagan Falls. While we started a couple of weeks earlier than usual, the weather showed up and provided beautiful blue skies. 21 cars started south from the Tim Hortons in Westbank. We stopped at the Penticton and Wine Country Visitor Centre where we met a few more members from Summerland and Penticton. With 26 cars now in a row we set off down Green Mountain Road and made a rest stop at Yellow Lake before heading to Oliver along the back roads.
Spring was certainly in the air, with fresh leaves on the trees, thousands of Okanagan sunflowers (actually called balsam arrowroot) decorating the hills and flowers budding on the fruit trees in the orchards. We stopped for lunch at Tinhorn Creek Winery, where half the people had lunch at Miradoro’s and the rest enjoyed a picnic in the amphitheatre overlooking the valley below.
New for this year is our loony pool. Each person attending contributed $1 to the pot and received a ticket. After lunch and a group photo we drew the winning ticket, and Val Terry of Keremeos received a total of $49! Congratulations Val! We then proceeded to Tickleberry’s where we endured very long lines, but the ice cream at the end was well worth the wait. Mmmm, Maple Bacon Madness. You really do need to try it! After enjoying our frozen treats, people choose their own way home. Some took the direct route and others headed to the Naramata Bench to sample the excellent wineries.
